RPG / ActionElden Ring Walkthrough: A Safe Opening Route to Stormveil
A Safe Start in Limgrave
Elden Ring drops you into a massive open world with no hand-holding, which is exactly why a fixed opening route helps. The goal of this walkthrough is to never fight a wall you are not ready for. Everything below is built to keep you alive while you learn the game's rhythm.
Begin in Limgrave after the tutorial crypt. Your first objective is to reach the Gatefront Ruins and activate the Site of Grace there. Melina will appear and grant Torrent, your horse. From that moment, exploration gets dramatically easier and escaping danger is a single button press away. Treat Torrent as mandatory kit, not a luxury.
Get Torrent and the Spirit Bell
Ride north to the Church of Elleh. In daylight the merchant sells useful basics like the Crafting Kit and arrows. Return at night and you will meet Ranni, who gives you the Spirit Calling Bell and the Lone Wolf Ashes. These are your first summons, and they are the reason early bosses become fair fights: a wolf pack pulls aggro while you land free hits.
Before leaving Limgrave, grab the map fragment and at least one Golden Seed so your Flask has extra charges. Skirt around the Tree Sentinel near the start rather than fighting it. The point of the opening hour is to gather tools, not to prove yourself against a mini-boss you can crush later.
The Weeping Peninsula Is the Safest Farm
Head south across the bridge into the Weeping Peninsula. Compared with Stormveil's castle approach, this region is gentle. The enemies are slow and clustered, and there are no brutally punishing bosses blocking the path. It is the best place in the early game to stack runes and practice combat.
Loop the camps and ruins, rest at a Site of Grace to respawn enemies, and repeat. Pick up the Great Turtle Shield near Castle Morne for full physical block, and don't be shy about using spirit ashes on the tougher patrols. After a short farming session you should be comfortably leveled, with your weapon upgraded and your Flasks filled.
Level Before the Castle
Resist the urge to rush Stormveil. A brief farming stop in the Peninsula will save you hours of frustration. The priorities are clear:
- Upgrade your weapon to +3 before investing in stats. Base damage beats spread-out attribute points.
- Push Vigor first, aiming for around 20 to 25 before Margit.
- Keep Endurance high enough for a medium roll so dodging actually works.
- Do not overlevel one offensive stat early; meet your weapon's minimum and move on.
- Stay at medium equip load. A heavy roll loses the i-frames that make dodges safe.
This discipline is what separates a smooth opening from a rage-quit. The castle is beatable at level 15, but it is enjoyable at level 20 to 25.
What to Carry Into the Castle
Before you cross into Stormhill, sort your inventory. Craft a few Fire and Rot Greases; a small status damage bonus shortens boss fights more than most players expect. Keep a short bow so you can pull lone soldiers out of packs instead of fighting groups. Restock your healing Flasks to full and confirm you have at least one extra charge from a Golden Seed. If you found the Great Turtle Shield, equip it on your back so you can swap to a safe 100% block when a boss combo gets overwhelming.
Map knowledge matters too. Liurnia is reachable after Godrick, but the path north also branches toward Caelid and the Altus Plateau later. You do not need to plan that far now; just remember that the open world is designed so you can always retreat, grow, and return. Stormveil is a gate, not a dead end.

Common Beginner Traps
Four habits sink early runs. The first is overleveling one offensive stat while neglecting Vigor, which leaves you dealing good damage but dying in two hits. The second is hoarding Smithing Stones instead of upgrading, which weakens every swing you take. The third is fighting the Tree Sentinel or other roaming mini-bosses out of pride rather than riding past them. The fourth is refusing summons and co-op help on the assumption that beating a boss alone is the only real win.
None of these are speedrun rules; they are comfort rules for a first playthrough. Elden Ring is forgiving about where you go, but it is strict about preparation. Follow the Limgrave setup, farm the Peninsula, level Vigor, upgrade your weapon, and use your wolves. Do that and the walkthrough writes itself.
Taking Margit, Then Godrick
Return to Stormhill and face Margit, the Fell Omen. He guards the castle gate and hits hard, but his attacks are telegraphed. Summon the wolves or a co-op phantom, watch for his jump slam and spear flurry, and punish the recovery frames. When he falls, the gate opens.
Inside Stormveil, clear methodically. Use your shield or summons against the soldier gauntlets and archers, and reach the rooftop for Godrick the Grafted. Phase one is a standard pressure test; phase two adds a fire-breathing dragon arm. Back off during the breath attack, then punish the cooldown. With summons active and a real level lead, Godrick goes down.
After the fight, Liurnia of the Lakes opens up. You will arrive as a prepared Tarnished instead of a confused one, which is the entire point of this route.
Early Tips That Save Runs
A few habits make the whole journey smoother. Use spirit ashes on every boss you are allowed to; they are not cheating, they are the intended safety net. Upgrade your weapon on a steady cadence rather than hoarding stones. Keep a medium load so every dodge counts. And remember that Elden Ring rewards exploration over brute force: if a fight feels impossible, go somewhere else, grow stronger, and come back. That loop is the game. When in doubt, the Peninsula is always there to farm a few more levels, so you never have to bash your head against a wall you can simply outgrow.
Reading Margit: Roll on the Swing, Not the Windup
Margit is the game's deliberate lesson in delayed attacks, and the reason he walls players is not damage or health. It is that his wind-ups run longer than your instincts expect, so a roll triggered by the start of an animation finishes before the weapon arrives.
| Attack | What to watch | The response |
|---|---|---|
| Delayed slashes and dagger follow-ups | He holds the weapon well past the point you expect | Wait for the swing itself, then roll |
| Jump slam | He leaves the ground and hangs briefly | Roll toward him as he lands, then punish the recovery |
| Cane and tail sweeps | Wide horizontal arc | Roll through the arc, not backwards out of it |
| Spear and shadow flurries (later phase) | A long chain with a fixed ending | Do not roll early; punish only after the final hit |
| Hammer with lingering holy ground | Hazard left on the floor after impact | Disengage rather than punish through it |
Two habits turn those reads into a win. Budget your swings: one or two hits per opening, then disengage with stamina left for a roll, because the third swing is what kills you here. And summon deliberately rather than maximally: one summon pulls aggro and creates openings, while throwing everything you own in spreads his attention across targets that all die separately.
Two tools are easy to miss at this point. Margit's Shackle, sold by a merchant in Limgrave, pins him briefly and works in the earlier part of the fight only, so use it as soon as the gate closes. A sorcerer's summon sign also sits outside the fog, adding a second body without costing you anything.
Stormveil's Back Route and What to Grab on the Way
Most players funnel through the front gate because the game points there, then fight the castle as a linear corridor. There is a second way in, and knowing it changes the whole area.
From the Stormhill side you can work along the cliff line to the Stormveil Cliffside site of grace, past a lone knight and the birds on the cliff edge, and up into the Rampart Tower, reaching the interior without passing Margit's gate. It is worth walking once even if you intend to fight him anyway, because it puts a grace and a shortcut inside the castle before you commit.
Do fight Margit first on a first playthrough. He is the tutorial for the delayed-timing lesson, and skipping him postpones the skill rather than avoiding it.
Inside, prioritise in this order: open the shortcut back toward the main gate so death stops costing you a long run, clear the Rampart Tower, then work down through the courtyard and gauntlets to the rooftop path that leads to the boss. Watch for the gatekeeper near the entrance, who sells useful things and controls a gate that shortens the loop, and look for the key dropped around the cliff area, which unlocks a storeroom that is easy to walk past. Keep a bow equipped for the courtyard: pulling single soldiers out of packs is the difference between a clean sweep and dying to three enemies you could have fought one at a time.
Where the Next Ten Levels Go
Vigor first is right, but it stops being advice once you are past the first boss. At that point the question is which symptom you actually have.
| Symptom | Spend on | Stop when |
|---|---|---|
| You die in one or two hits | Vigor | You survive one more hit from whatever is killing you; returns taper after its first major soft cap |
| You cannot finish a combo and still dodge out | Endurance | Your combo plus one roll fits inside your stamina bar |
| Your weapon is behind the area's curve | Smithing stones, not levels | The weapon is at the highest level your stones allow |
| Damage feels flat but requirements are met | Nothing yet: change the weapon's affinity | Your scaling matches the stat you invested in |
The principle underneath the table: levels buy survivability, upgrades buy damage. Early offensive stats are the weakest rune investment in the game, because an upgrade raises base damage and scaling at once while a point in strength or dexterity raises only one side. Meet your weapon's requirements, then stop.
Two tools keep you from being trapped by an early mistake. Ashes of War change a weapon's scaling to match the stats you already have, which is cheaper than respeccing, and respeccing opens up after the academy boss in Liurnia, so a badly spread early build is recoverable. What is not recoverable is the time lost fighting a boss twenty levels under-prepared.
Failure Modes and a Five-Minute Practice Drill
| Symptom | Why it happens | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| You roll and still get clipped | Rolling on the wind-up against delayed attacks | Roll when the swing travels, not when it starts |
| You die with an empty stamina bar | One swing too many per opening | Cap yourself at two hits, then create distance |
| Your spirit ash dies immediately | The ash is un-upgraded and eats area attacks | Upgrade summons with the material found in catacombs |
| You run out of flasks in longer fights | You collected seeds but not tears | Sacred Tears raise healing per flask, Seeds raise how many you carry |
| You keep losing the same fight | No information gathered between attempts | Run the drill below before the next attempt |
The drill is deliberately narrow. Enter the boss and spend the first sixty seconds doing nothing but defending: no attacks, no healing if you can avoid it, just movement. Do it ten times. The only goal is to survive sixty seconds untouched three attempts in a row.
This works because it separates two skills players usually practise badly at the same time. Most failed attempts are a blur of panicked rolling and greedy punishment, and you cannot tell which half is failing. Once you can survive a minute untouched, add one rule: punish only the attack whose recovery you are most confident about. That turns a boss you were guessing at into one you have read, faster than another hour of attempts or another five levels of grinding.
