Learn the Directional Codes and Cooldowns First

In Helldivers 2 your most powerful tools are stratagems, and they are summoned by inputting directional codes on the D-pad or WASD while holding the stratagem key โ€” L1 on PlayStation, Left Ctrl on PC. The game does not pause while you input, so the only way to stay alive is to drill the sequences until they are muscle memory. Fumbling a code mid-firefight gets you and your squad killed.

There are now roughly 78 stratagems across Offensive, Support, Defensive, and Eagle categories, but you only ever bring four into a mission. Each has a cooldown (how long until you can call it again) and a call-in delay (the time between throwing the beacon and the package arriving). Sentries additionally run for about 150 seconds before withdrawing. Learn your personal four codes cold, then expand. The codes themselves never change between sessions or updates, so any time you invest memorizing them pays off forever. Start on lower difficulties where the pressure is light, and treat every drop as practice for the moment the inputs have to be flawless under fire.

Build a Four-Pick Loadout That Covers Every Mission

With only four slots, your loadout has to handle every situation a mission throws at you: groups, heavies, and your own survival. A reliable all-rounder set is:

  • Orbital Precision Strike โ€” free, unlocked at level 1, code Right-Right-Up (โ†’ โ†’ โ†‘). A precise kinetic hit that deletes fabricators, bug holes, and wounded heavies. Keep it in almost every loadout.
  • Eagle Airstrike โ€” cheap and fast, code Up-Right-Down-Right (โ†‘ โ†’ โ†“ โ†’). Carpet-bombs a line, perfect for patrols and defending the extraction zone.
  • An anti-tank option โ€” the Quasar Cannon (infinite-ammo energy cannon, code Down-Down-Up-Left-Right / โ†“ โ†“ โ†‘ โ† โ†’) or the Recoilless Rifle (needs a reload partner, code Down-Left-Right-Right-Left / โ†“ โ† โ†’ โ†’ โ†). Either kills Chargers, Hulks, and Bile Titans.
  • A survival backpack โ€” the Shield Generator Pack (personal energy bubble, code Down-Up-Left-Right-Left-Right / โ†“ โ†‘ โ† โ†’ โ† โ†’) or the Supply Pack (extra ammo for you and allies, code Down-Left-Down-Up-Up-Down / โ†“ โ† โ†“ โ†‘ โ†‘ โ†“).

That combination gives you burst damage, area clear, heavy killing, and sustain โ€” enough to walk into almost any mission with confidence. Specialize from there once you know your faction.

Avoid Patrols โ€” Don't Shoot the First Enemy

One of the biggest difficulty spikes comes not from the objective but from patrols you wake up. Enemy patrols roam between points of interest, and if you gun down the first enemy you see, reinforcements cascade โ€” more spawns, more alarms, and often a second patrol drawn in. The result is a fight you never needed.

The discipline is to avoid contact when you can. Scout ahead, use terrain and cover, and let patrols pass rather than engaging. If a fight is unavoidable, focus fire to drop the group fast before any survivor triggers a call. The reconnaissance approach pays off because every avoided patrol is time and ammunition saved for the actual mission. This is especially true on higher difficulties where reinforcement budgets are tighter and a single mistake snowballs. Train yourself early: see enemy, assess, and only shoot when engagement is the better option. Most veteran squads lose more Helldivers to chained reinforcements than to the mission itself.

Extraction Discipline: Most Deaths Happen at the Pelican

Statistically, the deadliest moment in a Helldivers 2 mission is the extraction. Teams clear the objectives, relax, and then get wiped on the way to the Pelican or while waiting for it to land. Extraction is a defended event โ€” enemies funnel toward the pad โ€” so treat it like a final objective, not a victory lap.

Set up early. Call the Pelican as soon as you are ready, then use the wait time to lay defenses: drop a sentry or two covering the approaches, keep your strongest stratagem in reserve for the closing wave, and hold a perimeter rather than clustering on the pad. Save your biggest call โ€” a 500kg Bomb or Orbital Railcannon โ€” for when the extraction truly spikes, not for a stray patrol an hour earlier. Communicate: someone should watch each angle. The squad that treats extraction as a planned hold survives to the next drop; the squad that strolls in together gets melted together.

Friendly Fire Is Real โ€” Throw Past the Enemy

Helldivers 2 has no plot armor against your own team. Orbital strikes, Eagle bombs, sentries, and even the Hellpod drop itself will happily kill you and your squadmates. This is the game's signature comedy and its deadliest mechanic, so respect it.

When throwing a stratagem beacon, aim past the enemy and away from teammates โ€” the package lands where the beacon sticks, and a bounce off a wall can drop an airstrike on your own feet. Call out air strikes verbally so nobody walks into the blast. Sentries will fire on anything in their line of sight, including friendlies, so position them with a triangle of space between the turret, your squad, and the enemy approach. Even reinforcements have a danger: never call a Hellpod inside a Shield Generator Relay dome, because the pod's impact damages the shield. Assume every explosive you call can kill you, and play accordingly.

Quick Code Reference for the Core Loadout

Keep this cheat sheet for the all-rounder set described above. Input while holding the stratagem key; the sequences never change.

Drill these until you can input them without looking, and the rest of the 78 stratagems become easy to add later. Muscle memory is the difference between a squad that thrives on Helldive and one that breaks on Challenging.

Faction Branches: What Changes Against Each Enemy

The four-pick all-rounder is a starting point, not a final answer. Each faction applies a different kind of pressure, and a loadout built for one will feel actively wrong against another.

Terminids apply pressure through volume and closing speed. They come to you in numbers and they arrive fast, so area control beats precision and anything that slows or blankets an approach is worth more than a single-target strike. Your anti-heavy option needs to work at close range, because that is the distance at which you will meet a Charger.

Automatons apply pressure through armour and ranged accuracy. They hold lanes, shoot back from distance, and punish anyone standing in the open, so cover discipline and anti-armour matter more than crowd clear. Sentries do particularly well here because bots advance along predictable routes, and destroying fabricators from range is usually worth more than wiping the patrol standing next to them.

Illuminate forces mix shielded units with dense chaff, which means you need sustained fire to strip shields and an area option to handle what follows. Heavy single-target ordnance often overkills here, and the slot is better spent on something that keeps firing.

FactionMain pressureSlot to changeSlot to drop
TerminidsVolume and closing speedCrowd clear and slowsPrecision single-target
AutomatonsArmour and ranged fireAnti-armour, cover-friendly toolsPure crowd clear
IlluminateShields and dense chaffSustained fire plus area clearHeavy single-target ordnance

The decision rule: choose your anti-heavy tool by faction first, since that is the slot with the fewest substitutes, then spend the remaining three on whatever pressure type that faction actually brings. A squad that gets the anti-armour choice right can improvise the rest; a squad that gets it wrong cannot.

Cooldown Math: Never Be Empty-Handed

The most common strategic failure in Helldivers 2 is spending all four stratagems on the first serious contact and then arriving at the objective with nothing. This is a clock problem, and it is easy to manage once you separate two timers that players routinely confuse.

The cooldown starts when you input the code, not when the ordnance lands. That means an early call in a fight is strictly better than a late one, because the clock is running while the enemies are still alive to be hit. Waiting until you are overwhelmed before calling your long-cooldown strike guarantees it will not be available when you need it next.

Keep one option in reserve as a standing rule. Treat your four slots as two you are willing to spend freely and two you hold unless the fight genuinely requires them. The reserve is what turns a bad situation into a retreat instead of a squad wipe.

Eagle weapons complicate this because they share a rearm cycle. Eagle stratagems come with a limited number of uses, after which the Eagle returns to rearm and everything in that category is unavailable for a stretch. That makes Eagle picks inherently bursty: spend them together in a cluster to get maximum value from the window, then expect a dry period and plan around it. Always pair an Eagle offensive with a non-Eagle one so a rearm never leaves you with nothing to call.

The failure mode to watch is calling ordnance onto an empty field. The cooldown has already started, the enemies are already dead, and you have spent your reserve for no effect. Call at the beginning of contact, even if it feels premature.

Four Ways Squads Actually Wipe

Failure mode one is the reinforcement cascade. A patrol that is not deleted within seconds calls for reinforcements, each wave overlaps the last, and what began as four enemies becomes a fifteen-minute attrition battle you cannot win. The cause is engaging without the intent to finish. The fix is a commitment rule: if you engage, commit overwhelming fire immediately, and if you cannot commit, disengage and relocate rather than grinding. Attrition always favours the side with infinite reinforcements.

Failure mode two is splitting up. A lone Helldiver has nobody to reinforce them and no fire superiority, so every solo death costs far more than it appears to. The fix is to stay within reinforcing distance by default, separate only to complete objectives, and re-form immediately afterward rather than drifting apart while looting.

Failure mode three is ammunition starvation. Players burn support weapon rounds on small enemies and then meet the heavy with an empty weapon and no resupply available. The fix is a weapon discipline rule: primary weapons handle chaff, support weapons handle armour. Call resupply early and on the move, while you still have ammunition, rather than when everyone is dry and standing still waiting for it.

Failure mode four is objective tunnel vision. Standing in the open working a terminal while patrols converge is the single most reliable way to lose a squad that has done everything else correctly. The fix is sequencing: clear the immediate area first, then start the objective with one player explicitly watching the approach rather than helping.

A Drill: Code Speed and the One-Minute Extraction Hold

Code input is a perishable skill and it is the cheapest thing in the game to practise. Run this at the start of every session: pick a direction, start moving, and input your four core codes back to back without looking at the on-screen arrow guide. Time yourself, not to chase a record but to confirm you are not stalling.

Progress it in three stages. First standing still, then while moving and reloading, then while under fire on a low difficulty. The third stage is the one that matters, because a code you can only input while stationary is a code you will fumble exactly when it counts. If you cannot complete a full sequence while moving, that is a real signal that higher difficulties will punish you regardless of your aim.

Then drill the extraction separately, because it is the same skill at every difficulty level and therefore the cheapest thing to master. Call the Pelican, spread the squad to cover the approaches rather than clustering on the pad, and hold for the full wait. Score the hold on three questions: did anyone die, did you still have a stratagem available for the final wave, and did the whole squad board.

The rule that makes the drill pay off: if you fail the extraction hold twice in a row, drop a difficulty and re-run it until it is clean. Extraction is not harder at higher difficulties in kind, only in volume, so a hold you can execute cleanly on a mid difficulty transfers upward almost intact.
